VooDoo Child
BRUNCH...say it with me...BRUUUUUH-UNCH. That's the best meal of the day in my opinion. You get to savour the goodness of breakfast and lunch combined, not to mention sleep in till noon on those lazy weekends. *cue tears of joys*
Kensington market. It's an unassuming, and perhaps sometimes sketchy-looking part of town that I normally wouldn't give a second glance. But under the friendly light of day, the market bustles to life; and the quaint, homey streets are where I indulge my wanderlust. Grocery stores, novelty shops, fresh bakeries and pâtisseries, quirky cafés and restaurants, are what comes to mind at the mention of Kensington market.
It was a fine Sunday morning - blessed with a rare bout of sunshine, that my friend and I made our way to VooDoo Child for a long overdue catch-up session over brunch. Don't you fret. Despite it's name, there're no creepy dolls with needles sticking out or any weird occult like happenings involved. A definite chart topper in my top brunch places in Toronto, VooDoo Child is a tiny café situated on the fringe of Kensington Market, at the College-Borden intersection.
It's a humble establishment, with not much seating, so finding a seat on the weekends can be absolutely insane - especially if you come in groups of 4 or more. Getting something for the road might be a lot easier. Their counter is well-stocked with freshly baked muffins, biscuits, scones etc. But hey, a little sacrifice goes a long way~ So if you can squelch those hunger pangs of yours and stick around, I assure you the wait is well worth your time.
Ahhh...now for the menu. It's an enigma that never ceases to delight each time you go there. There're usually 3-4 items written on the brunch menu, but this keeps switching up, enticing customers to come back for something new every time. Trust me, the service and the food never fail to satisfy. ❤
We sat at the bar table, overlooking the open kitchen, and salivating as the chef whipped up dish after dish. Scrambled eggs with truffle oil and mushrooms atop a slice of sourdough bread? Throw in sausages and a side of arugula salad with cheese, pomegranate seeds and a slight drizzle of olive oil, and you have yourself a meal that will tingle your senses.
For all you caffeine lovers out there, fret not. The coffees and teas at VooDoo Child will bring a smile to your face. Forget the regular flavours of Earl Grey or Darjeeling (which they do have as well). Perfectly Pear, Mint Chocolate, Persian Palace and Heavenly Cream etc. Even the names of these exotic tea flavours sound downright alluring. For those seeking good old regular coffee, their mochaccino or lattes do the trick as well.
Did I mention that this café doubles as a bar? No?! Well, I say that a cocktail over breakfast is just peachy. Who cares if it's before noon? (; No judging over here.
You might come out of the place smelling a bit like food and smoke. Eau de Smoked Bacon. It's a thing (; But 'tis a small price to pay! If you're looking for a new place for your weekend brunch, it's time to add VooDoo Child to your bucket list. There's nothing more pleasant than catching up with friends over a hearty meal and a good cup of coffee! Just save a seat for me ❤
